Named for the nut tree. Having got out at the end of Umbrella Oak, the current is now swinging round from the left to the right bank and therefore is too deep to wade. Start below the overhead wires taking extreme care not to touch then with rod or line. The river now is very sluggish and deep, and in low water almost still. It is however extremely good holding water even in very low conditions. The technique we use is to spin ‘round the clock’ in a fan at each of the gaps that have been cleared. In low water a small mepps can be deadly here. At the longest gap, and the last major gap before the stream comes in on the right bank it is best to walk around it giving a wide berth and cast your spinner almost directly upstream. The fish can see you on the high bank if you fish it more conventionally. In very low water fish can often be spotted with Polaroids and can be cast to with either a spinner or a small weighted fly. If they wont take you could always try a shrimp!
